I am a freelance web developer, website designer and web consultant based near Edinburgh in Scotland.
I've been working in web design and project management pretty much since the internet first became mainstream.
I was teaching about the internet and web design using HTML back in 1995 when working at Heriot-Watt University; developed many websites and web applications for various departments of the University of Edinburgh; and most recently worked with the University, the NHS and Midlothian Council on migrations into new Content Management Systems, where the focus was on optimising the website structure and content to be Accessible and easier to read and understand, therefore making the websites more customer-focussed.
Over 2 years, this approach helped raise Midlothian’s website from one of the worst in the country (1*) to 4* in the most recent Society of IT Managers (Socitm) review.
I decided to leave Midlothian and work as a freelance web developer to allow me to work full-time developing dynamic web applications using web scripting languages such as ColdFusion, classic ASP (VBscript), PHP, JavaScript, Ajax and JQuery linking to databases such as MySQL or Microsoft Access and using standards-based HTML5 and CSS3.
Web application development was something I first came across when I did a part-time Masters degree - MSc Information Technology - at Heriot-Watt, and it's something I really enjoy doing.
Over the years I've done a lot of teaching and training on web design, PhotoShop and "Writing for the Web", so if you need a bespoke training session or some consultancy on content optimisation or SEO I'd be glad to help.
In my spare time I’m a keen skier, horse rider and photographer, so I often use my own photography in website designs.
If you think that we could work together on a website project, please get in touch!
